BIO: Dr. Zoghby was born in Cincinnati, OH, the son of an army “JAG” he lived in 17 different houses in GA, AL, MD, CT, and London, England before graduating from high school in San Jose, CA. He earned his DDS, Cum Laude, from the University at Buffalo in New York State in 1986, and completed his residency at MCV/VCU in 1990. He has been part of the COFS team since 1994, and lectures nationally and internationally on a range of oral surgery subjects. Dr. Zoghby often receives the Bedside Manner Award from OurHealth Magazine for Richmond, and is perennially honored as one of the area’s top Oral Surgeons by both Richmond Magazine and Virginia Living Magazine. He and his wife have 5 children between them and they enjoy hiking, camping, cycling, dining, music, art, and theater.

BIO: Dr. Sarraf emigrated with his family from his birthplace of Baghdad, Iraq at age 11. He received his Bachelors, graduating with distinction, from UVA in 2004, and his DDS in 2009 from VCU, where he received numerous academic awards. He joined COFS in 2013 after completing his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, also at VCU. Dr. Sarraf is passionate about volunteering and has participated in the Mission of Mercy project through the VDA, and on mission trips to Honduras and Jamaica. He is perennially honored as one of the area’s top oral surgeons by Richmond and Virginia Living Magazine. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Dr. Sara Sarraf, an OB-GYN with Virginia Women’s Center, and their three children, as well as hiking, running (the Monument 10k) and cooking.

BIO: Dr. Broccoli is part of an Air Force family and lived in Texas, Japan, Arkansas, Virginia and New York. He developed an interest in dentistry, inspired by his middle school wrestling coach, the local dentist in Long Island. He attended JMU where he earned his Bachelors, and went on to receive his Masters from Tulane University before earning his DDS from VCU. He completed his residency at University of Cincinnati Medical Center and joined COFS in 2021. Dr. Broccoli has volunteered with the Mission of Mercy and the Jamaica Mission Project, and as a research technician at the North Shore – Long Island Jewish Health System. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Lisa, and their two daughters, as well as cycling, mountain biking, running, golfing, and hiking.

BIO: Dr. Kaplan’s mother was a prominent pediatric dentist in Chesapeake, so by the time she entered college Dr. Kaplan was well acquainted with dentistry. During her undergrad years at UVA, along with her studies, she volunteered at the Charlottesville Free Dental Clinic. Her dedication to volunteerism continued during her time at VCU where she worked with the Mission of Mercy project while earning her DDS and completing her residency. She joined COFS in 2021. Dr. Kaplan is an avid skier, hiker and swimmer, and has recently completed her first triathlon. She’s one-third of the way through her quest to visit all 63 national parks with her husband, Jake. When she’s not hiking or exercising, she can be spotted walking her rescue puppy, Lucy, in Richmond’s Museum District, or floating down the James River.

BIO: Dr. Harlan A. Schufeldt graduated from the University of Illinois in 1973. He attended Loyola University School of Dentistry, in Maywood, Illinois and earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1978. In 1981, Dr. Schufeldt completed his residency and received his certificate of specialty in Prosthodontics from the Veterans Administration Hospital at Hines, Il. He also completed a residency/fellowship in Maxillofacial Prosthetics from the Zoller Clinic at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics in 1982. Dr. Schufeldt joined the faculty of Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University, School of Dentistry in 1982. He served as an Associate Clinical Professor in the Departments of Orthodontics, Restorative Dentistry, division of Advanced Education of General Dentistry, and the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery until his retirement in 2020. Dr. Schufeldt has lectured extensively on Prosthodontics and Oral and Facial Rehabilitation throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. He has published scientific research articles and papers and serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the Virginia Dental Association. Dr. Schufeldt has been in private practice in Henrico, Va. and Midlothian, Va. specializing in Prosthodontics and Maxillofacial Prosthetics for almost 40 years.

The Evolution of Orthognathic Surgery & the Use of TADs in Occlusal Correction

Learning Objectives

• Understand how to evaluate patients in the planning of corrective jaw surgery
• Learn how the work-up and planning of corrective jaw surgery has changed over the last 30 years
• Develop a feeling for how corrective jaw surgery improves facial esthetics
• Understand how computerized virtual surgical planning is done and what steps are necessary for getting accurate results
• Have a basic understanding of the types of surgery used to address different skeletal malocclusions
• Understand the different types of anchorage, how TADs are placed, and how Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs/bone anchors) assist orthodontists in accomplishing more difficult tooth movements.

BIO: Dr. Miller grew up in Lynchburg, VA. He was awarded his DDS from MCV/VCU School of Dentistry in 1984 where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and was also class Valedictorian. He completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at MCV/VCU in 1988 and has been a COFS surgeon since 1992. Dr. Miller also serves as Chief of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at St. Mary’s Hospital. He annually participates in the Mission of Mercy (MOM) Project, bringing oral surgery care to the underserved in Wise County, VA. He’s perennially recognized with a Top Dentist Award from both Richmond Magazine and Virginia Living Magazine. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, tennis, golf, music, magic, scuba diving, and travel.

BIO: Dr. Boxx’s interest in dentistry began during his childhood in Newport News spending time in his father’s dental office. While earning his Bachelors, Cum Laude, from Virginia Tech, he shadowed and assisted an oral surgeon. He received his DDS, Magna Cum Laude, from VCU, where he went on to complete his residency. He joined COFS in 2019. Dr. Boxx participated in over a dozen Mission of Mercy projects throughout dental school and during his residency. He has been honored several times as a top oral surgeon by both Richmond Magazine and Virginia Living Magazine. He enjoys spending time with his wife Emily, a Nurse Practitioner, and their golden retriever, Duke, as well as fishing, boating, camping at the beach, and taking advantage of Richmond’s many hiking trails.
